Queen Letizia's niece leads glamorous European royals in life of luxury

Being an heir to the throne comes with all sorts of privileges – wealth, global recognition and even, in some cases, power. But it can also be something of a gilded cage.

Life is rather more relaxed a little further down the line however. We are talking about a world of money and entitlement without the pressure of official duties.

From brand deals, red carpet events and plain old-fashioned wealth, the advantages of royal connections are more than evident across Europe’s social scene.

Princess Maria Chiara Di Bourbon-Two Sicilies, 18, is the daughter of Prince Carlo, Duke of Castro and Princess Camilla, Duchess of Castro

Take Victoria de Marichalar y Borbón, for example. The 22-year-old niece of King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain is starring on the front covers of ¡HOLA! and Elle Spain.

Fifth in line to the Spanish throne, the young royal has been dubbed one of Tatler magazine’s new ‘It’ girls and is routinely invited to fancy balls and catwalk shows.

Another new royal on the scene is 18-year-old Princess Maria Chiara Di Bourbon-Two Sicilies – daughter of Prince Carlo, Duke of Castro and Princess Camilla, Duchess of Castro.

The teenage princess can speak six languages and has been seen on the red carpet at Cannes Film Festival, making appearances at Paris Fashion Week. But she spends most of her time dipping in and out of Rome.

Meanwhile, Grace Kelly’s granddaughter Charlotte Casiraghi has modelled for Chanel on horseback.

It just goes to show you don’t need a throne to lead a luxurious life

Dubbed a new ‘It girl’ by Tatler, 22-year-old Victoria de Marichalar y Borbón is fifth in line to the Spanish throne and is the extremely glamorous niece of King Felipe of Spain.

She is the only daughter and younger child of King Felipe’s older sister Infanta Elena, 58, and her ex-husband Jaime de Marichalar, 58.

As a teenager, she reportedly attended boarding school in Sussex before enrolling at the College for International Studies (CIS) in Madrid, where she studied business administration and management.

Now she’s eyeing up a career in fashion and her impeccable connections that secured her an invite to the Dior show at last year’s Paris Fashion Week, where she posed up a storm with Rihanna, are bound to help.

Her father, Jaime de Marichalar works as an advisor at the LVMH group in Spain and has access to all established brands like Loewe as well as the upcoming designers making waves in the Mediterranean.

Meanwhile, she’s been busy documenting her jet-set life on Instagram where she’s racked up 230,000 followers, and has appeared on the covers of magazines such as !Hola! and Elle Spain.

In an interview, with the latter Victoria defended her grandfather, former Spanish King Juan Carlos, who has been living in Abu Dhabi since summer 2020 after becoming the target of several probes in Spain over his financial dealings.

Victoria said she has always admired her grandfather and sees him as a second father, keeping in regular contact despite the distance between them.

‘I have always seen him as a dedicated man and I hope that all the work and effort that he has made throughout his life is recognised and esteemed,’ she said.

The royal said the former king is a big source of inspiration for her and that one of her tattoos was modelled on the last boat he sailed on before he left the country in disgrace.

She added that Juan Carlos taught her to be herself ‘in everything that I do’, adding that she’s very close to her grandmother Queen Sofia too.

Victoria, who described herself as a practicing Catholic, said she can tell when people approach her under false pretences, and that she has learned to trust a close-knit network of friends.

She is also a big fan of bullfighting, often seen at the Last Ventas bullring in the Spanish capital.

Many royal fans have been quick to point out the similarities in style between Victoria and her fashionable aunt Queen Letizia and has been spotted in the monarch’s favourite designer, Lorenzo Caprile, on the red carpet.

Victoria has been dating DJ Jorge Bárcenas since 2019, after meeting at the Starlite festival in Marbella, and the pair live together in an apartment on Paseo de la Castellana in Madrid.

PRINCESS OLYMPIA OF GREECE

The monarchy in Greece was abolished decades ago but the royal family still continue to use their titles, including 26-year-old Princess Olympia who has reaped the rewards of her royal connections.

Princess Olympia is the goddaughter of King Charles and grew up in Chelsea, immersing herself within the London social scene, hanging out with models such as Poppy Delavigne and singer Isabel Getty.

Other close pals include Diane von Fürstenberg’s model granddaughter, Princess Talita Natasha von Fürstenberg and the Hilton sisters.

Olympia’s grandfather, who died in January age 82, is a relative of the late Prince Philip and was exiled from Greece following the 1967 coup.

Her catalogue of appearances includes starring on the pages of Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue Thailand.

She also has a number of paid partnerships with brands such as Louis Vuitton, Tiffany and Bulgari perfumes, as well as modelling for D&G, which has courted the new generation of young royals and high society beauties to represent the brand.

As with her fellow royal socialites, she is often seen jet-setting around the world whether it’s skiing in St Moritz, France, modelling in Paris, and travelling back to her family’s homeland Greece.

In July 2021, she spent the whole month away with her four brothers and their parents, Crown Prince Pavlos and Princess Marie-Chantal of Greece.

Her boyfriend Peregrine Pearson, whose family has a reputed £224 million fortune joined the family vacation.

Perry’s father owns a large chunk of the Pearson media empire and a 16,500-acre West Sussex estate, which is home to Cowdray Park polo club where Prince William and Harry played.

CAMILLE GOTTLIEB

She is the granddaughter of Grace Kelly and so undoubtedly enjoys a glamorous lifestyle, even being dubbed her grandmother’s lookalike by royal fans.

Camille Gottlieb is the daughter of Princess Stephanie of Monaco who is the younger sister of reigning Prince Albert of Monaco.

The 24-year-old’s father is her mother’s former head of security Jean Raymond Gottlieb.

But while the socialite shares her father’s surname, it did not appear on the birth certificate and Princess Stephanie has never confirmed that this the case.

Camille, therefore, is not in the line of succession because Stephanie and Gottlieb never got married. Stephanie also has two other children, Louis, 29, and Pauline, 28, whom she shares with her first husband, bodyguard Daniel Ducruet.

Either way, Camille still enjoys the limelight.

Photos from her 24th birthday showed her throwing a pink cowboy themed party.

The Monaco royal was seen posing with a large pink and white floral display, and pouting for the camera in a cowboy hat.

In another picture, the stylish birthday girl is being given a kiss on the cheek by fashion designer Andrea Del Monaco.

While most of her social media posts show her waltzing around Monaco, more recently she has been travelling, taking a trip to Montreal, Canada in November and bringing in the New Year in the French Alps.

She is also accompanied by a five-year-old Romanian rescue dog called Leonie Jolie, who has her own Instagram account.

When she is not travelling, Camille is a keen philanthropist, setting up a drink-drive aware non-profit called BE SAFE Monaco with high school pals after losing a friend in a car crash, as well as being on the board of directors of the Monegasque Red Cross.

She said that from the age of five she was accompanying her mother to ‘Christmas parties for disabled children or the elderly’.

‘I was literally imbued with mutual aid values. Ever since I was old enough to understand, I was told about the fight against HIV,’ she told Hello Monaco.

In the same interview she spoke about her interest in film and photography and said that we will see her on screen soon after being cast for a role in a series.

When Camille was three years old, Stephanie began a relationship with married elephant trainer Franco Knie.

The Princess, along with her three children, ended up moving into his circus caravan, but the relationship ended the following year, with the family moving back to Monaco.

CHARLOTTE CASIRAGHI

Charlotte Casiraghi is the second child of Princess Caroline of Hanover and the late Italian businessman Stefano Casiraghi, who died in 1990.

She does not consider herself a ‘princess’ though. She told Vogue: ‘My mother is, not me. I am the niece of a head of state.

‘And with this status, I have some representational duties, nothing very constraining or very exceptional.’

Her grandmother is also Princess Grace Kelly of Monaco, like Camille, and her uncle is Prince Albert II, the monarch of Monaco.

This makes the eleventh in line to the Monegasque throne.

Charlotte is an accomplished equestrian, and last January was one of Chanel’s ambassadors, riding a horse around the Chanel runway at Paris Fashion week.

She also starred in a music video for Sebastian Tellier’s song Mademoiselle that played tribute to Coco Chanel.

During the abstract video, Charlotte is seen petting a giant corgi, dancing and riding in a flying shark.

Charlotte has two children, nine-year-old Raphaël Elmaleh and four-year-old Balthazar Rassam, and is reportedly pregnant with her third.

Raphaël’s father is Moroccan French stand-up comedian Gad Elmaleh, whom she dated from 2011 to 2015.

She went on to date Italian filmmaker Lamberto Sanfelice, before splitting in 2016.

Shortly after this she met her husband Dimitri Rassam, a 39-year-old French film producer, who she married in 2019.

They have one son together, Balthazar, and as of January French media report she is expecting her third child.

The style icon told Town and Country magazine about her experiences raising children.

She said: ‘Every day has hard and amazing moments. Every day you go through moments when you worry for your children or when they exhaust you, and then you go through moments when you share so much with them, and you don’t even question the fact that they’re the most important thing in your life.’

The couple tends to keep a low profile; however, they do step out for certain occasions such as on Monaco Day and the annual Rose Ball.
