What does astrology tell us about the royal family's relationships, asks PATRICK ARUNDELL?

There are few more closely watched families than the Royal Family and its distinctive constellation of characters and stars.

Each is subject to the extraordinary strains of life in the public eye, with history, duty and the contradictory wishes for privacy and self-expression all bearing down upon them.

But their lives are defined and elevated, also, by their unique astrological charts, which combine the circumstances of their birth with the progress of the planets, stars and asteroids as the years progress.

Here, leading astrologer Patrick Arundell explains how these powerful forces are playing out in the most intimate sphere – shaping the key relationships which not only sustain the lives of the individual royals, but help hold the Monarchy together.

The  Royal Family has its own constellation of characters and stars who continue to intrigue. So what does their Natal astrology tell us, asks Patrick Arundell?  Pictured: The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh in November 2007

Harry's Sun Moon Mid-Point is 'Conjunct Meghan's Descendant'. Ring a cosmic bell? This is exactly the same combination that the Queen and Prince Philip shared

Harry’s Sun Moon Mid-Point is ‘Conjunct Meghan’s Descendant’. Ring a cosmic bell? This is exactly the same combination that the Queen and Prince Philip shared

The key ingredients in each person’s Natal Birth Chart

The Sun – Energy and Drive

The Moon – Security and Nurture

The Ascendant – Physical Self – how others see us

The Midheaven – Work and Worldly Role

The Sun Moon Mid-point – Our overall Personality

The Venus Mars Mid-Point – Our key way of relating

The Queen and Prince Philip

The late Queen and Prince Philip’s relationship really was a match made in Heaven, which is why their devotion to one another was so long-lasting.

By comparing their Celestial Connections, we can reach a number of quite incredible conclusions.

Prince Philip’s understanding of  The Queen’s needs is likely to have been very, very strong. This is because Prince Philip’s Sun Moon Mid-Point was Conjunct (side-by-side) the Queen’s Descendant – in other words the point in her chart where she related to others most acutely.

The Queen’s Sun Moon Mid-Point was also Conjunct Philip’s Sun and Mars – in her sector of romance. Therefore, it is likely that she likely saw him as dashing, charismatic and exciting to be with.

Their Moons were both in the people-pleasing 7th House, in Leo. Many have said that beyond Prince Philip’s bluster, he was a very kind man, and this would make sense as 7th House Moon people like to be attuned to the needs of others. Prince Philip’s Venus, the planet of love, was also Conjunct the Queen’s Sun.

This again, is one of the best combinations in a romantic chart analysis. Whilst the Queen’s Venus was in Pisces, which is a very positive location for this planet, it was also Conjunct Prince Philip’s Eros, the asteroid of romance and desire.

Charles and Camilla

Their two Ascendant’s in Leo are almost side by side, less than a degree apart. This would give them an instant feeling of comfort and ease with one another. A lovely combination.

Further, Charles’ Sun Moon Mid-Point or the balance of his being, is in her 7th House of relating, a great location for a relationship.

Their Suns are almost exactly in Trine, one of Astrology’s most enabling links, and both in Water Signs, Scorpio and Cancer respectively, and thus mutually receptive.

Camilla’s Jupiter, which can be an uplifting, jovial and positive energy, Conjunct Charles’ Sun, and I would imagine that her sense of fun. But her innate encouragement has also been of great support to the King, who can perhaps be more on the introspective side.

The King’s Sun in Scorpio also forges a helpful and enabling angle to Camilla’s Sun Moon Mid-point in Cancer.

Camilla’s Ceres, an Asteroid noted for the principles of mothering, nurture and love of food (not surprisingly, given that her son Tom Parker-Bowles is The Mail on Sunday’s food critic) is in the earthy, sensuous Taurus, almost exactly side by side Charles’ Moon. A lovely and very encouraging combination.

Charles has Venus and Neptune Conjunct in Libra, but in the tender 4th House, a very Cancerian vibe. This combination may be dominated by the Element of Air (the need to communicate) but is intensely sensitive, and picks up on all the Cancerian energy in Camilla’s chart positively.

Their Mars positions are, though, opposite by sign. Yet crucially Camilla’s Uranus is opposite Charles’ Mars, the planet of gratification, and perhaps this is the aspect which kept them apart for many years.

This is because Uranus creates a need for space and freedom.

Charles and Camilla’s respective horoscopes and combined relationship analysis shows high mutual support. They are instinctively comfortable and at ease.

William and Kate

Having the Moon in the same sign of Cancer as the couple do, is very helpful for instincts around home and children can align comfortably.

William likely greatly appreciates the location of Catherine’s Jupiter to support his worldly role and they have some very good links around shared values.

Catherine’s Moon and North Node (her life journey) are in William’s 7th House, a favourable location for him as Catherine’s placements are very supportive.

William and Kate’s astrology shows that their relationship has a tremendous sense of a shared mission, friendship and co-operation

Swapping the charts around sees none of William’s planets in Catherine’s own 7th House, which could in some cases point towards a lack of sympathy, but he has so many placements in his own 7th House, he is not lacking the astrological the assets required to tune into other people skillfully.

What is a natal birth chart?

Astrology’s innate power comes from the Natal Birth Chart – the exact moment that an event occurs or a person enters the world.

This blueprint provides an incredible amount of information, that along with our biological influences, early environment and life experiences, shapes who we are, but crucially provides a fantastic base of knowledge that can help us navigate challenges, but also firmly seize opportunities.

We all experience the power of planetary gravitational forces, and most obviously during the Moon’s cycles. The location of the Sun by Zodiac Sign, is just one part of this complex but fascinating framework.

Every single planet and celestial relationship between them, known as Aspects, creates a unique set of influences, some enabling and some more challenging. Further, the 360 degree Chart Wheel, is divided into twelve Houses or segments. The location of the planet, and then its House position, provides a sharper more detailed characterisation.

So, as much as our Sun Sign and our Daily Horoscope can provide a very helpful celestial pit stop in an otherwise busy schedule, it is this deeper, more forensic cosmic Map which is so incredibly illuminating.

Further, in serious Astrology timing is everything, and the clock, governed by Old Father Time, Saturn (or Chronos in Greek Mythology), never stops ticking. Why? Well, from the moment we are born the Astrology, just like our personal life story, evolves, and the Natal Birth Chart moves over time, known as the Progressed Chart, and so do our attitudes, aptitudes and skills.

The Natal Birth Chart remains at the core of our being, but the task of professional astrologers is to mesh all these moving parts together, and give clients a cohesive joined up understanding of who they are, where they are heading, and the timings of when it’s best to make bold moves or to work on our inner selves.

There is, however, a paradox in William’s chart: the Ascendant in Sagittarius, Conjunct Black Moon Lilith (a part of the Chart to do with what we desire) suggests he could find himself going backwards and forwards from a need for freedom, independence and thrills, to the more family, emotionally orientated energies of Cancer.

Their relationship does, though, appear to have a tremendous sense of a shared mission, friendship and co-operation.

Harry and Meghan

The wonderful thing that Harry and Meghan share is that their Ascendants are in opposite signs. So, the self (1st House) has the counterpoint of the partner (7th House).

Also, Harry’s Sun Moon Mid-Point is conjunct Meghan’s Descendant. Ring a cosmic bell? This is exactly the same combination that the Queen and Prince Philip shared.

This is really delightful, and means that both Harry and Meghan feel the other has their back. Also, his Sun links in a lovely angle to her Ascendant so he receives the way she comes across with enthusiasm and acceptance.

Meanwhile, Meghan’s Sun Moon Mid-Point links perfectly to Harry’s Mercury in its home sign of Virgo, and also to his Natal Jupiter in Capricorn.

All this will give them a lot to talk about, and a lot about how they can help others through their good causes.

Harry’s Venus connects to Meghan’s Pluto, suggesting a power of attraction which runs all the way to karmic.

Harry’s freedom-loving planet angles perfectly to Meghan’s Sun, giving him the permission to be playful, uninhibited and himself.

Catches? Well, there are a couple of notable ones, but few couples’ charts are perfect.

Harry’s Saturn (the planet of limitation) is on Meghan’s 4th House Cusp in Equal House Astrology. This could at times see her feel somewhat reserved around him, but the 4th House can also mean family, so perhaps that is where this aspect comes through.

The other (like in his chart) is that the swirling, mysterious and sometimes confusing energies of Neptune (this time hers) Square his Sun. This can be a very subtle but powerful influence and affect people’s reality.

Prince Andrew and Sarah

Both Andrew and Sarah have Mars featuring powerfully in their charts. Mars is about action, desire, impulse, ego, restlessness and drive.

This comes from Mars being the traditional ruler of Scorpio (his Moon, her Ascendant, Mercury and Neptune) and the only ruler of Aries (her Moon).

Mars is Exalted (or given extra uplift) in Capricorn (his Mars), but less so in Libra (her Sun and Mars), where it is ‘debilitated’, or weakened.

Why are Andrew and Sarah seemingly such great friends? Simple, their Sun Moon Mid-Points are exactly Conjunct in Capricorn at 12 and 13 degrees respectively. Therefore, they feel very comfortable with one another.

The relating part of their two charts is however more complex. Their Venus Mars Mid-Points (romance) align well, but the parts of the two charts where couples need to support and nurture each other have little planetary support at all.

In fact, Andrew’s chart applying to Sarah’s sees Chiron, the comet which is said to be our inner wound, jointly in their 7th Houses of relating.

This suggests that they are both people who need to lead, or at least follow their own paths and their astrological connectivity is strong as friends and parents, but not as long-term partners.

Zara and Mike Tindall

Mike’s Sun at 24 degrees Libra is very close to Zara’s Moon at just under 20 degrees.

This is one of the loveliest of connections in astrology that couples can enjoy. The Sun protects and the Moon nurtures.

Zara’s Sun Moon Mid-Point at 7 degrees Leo, is Conjunct Mike’s at 4, 8 or 11 degrees. This is absolutely wonderful stuff, and of course he has the uplifting Jupiter in the mix, which means he likely cheers Zara or makes her laugh a lot.

His Eros, the Asteroid of romance, is Conjunct Zara’s Moon – also a very nice combination.

Mike and Zara have one of the loveliest connections in astrology that couples can enjoy. It suggests they understand each other well, keep it light where possible, enjoy lots of events and interests together. From a celestial viewpoint this appears to be a quite beautiful relationship

Mike and Zara have one of the loveliest connections in astrology that couples can enjoy. It suggests they understand each other well, keep it light where possible, enjoy lots of events and interests together. From a celestial viewpoint this appears to be a quite beautiful relationship

Their Venus Mars Mid-Points (romance) are exactly opposite one another – Mike’s is in Scorpio and Zara’s is in Taurus. Therefore, they provide the perfect foil for one another’s needs around intimacy and closeness.

Mike’s Venus is also opposite Zara’s Sun – perfect for a love relationship as this confers great attraction between the partners.

It is likely that Zara doesn’t enjoy being crowded, though, with Uranus opposite her Sun. Mike would understand this too, with his Venus so close to her planet of freedom. She may need space occasionally but so will he, with his Mars so close to his own planet of independence.

Their Cupidos, another Asteroid of passion, are side by side in Scorpio. Sweet!

Their Mars position are though opposite, so they may be competitive at times. It could get fiery too. Never a dull moment in the Tindall household!

Mike’s Moon also applies to Zara’s Sun, so the reverse of her Moon to his Sun. We can’t say exactly how closely as the time of his birth is not in the public domain. But whatever the degree the Moon was at, there was a very favourable connection on the day he was born.

Mike and Zara are very fortunate with these set of influences. It suggests they understand each other well, keep it light where possible and enjoy lots of events and interests together. From a celestial viewpoint this appears to be a quite beautiful relationship.
